What I've Been Noticing Lately...
As we step into this new year, it’s hard to ignore the weight of what we’ve endured together. From the devastating fires in Los Angeles to hurricanes, wars, and other events that have shaken our world, it’s clear that life can change in an instant. These moments test us, but they also remind us of a profound truth: we are stronger together.
What I’ve been reflecting on is how, even in the face of such immense challenges, we find ways to rise. We see helpers in our communities—neighbors opening their homes, volunteers handing out supplies, and strangers lending a kind word. These acts of service and connection are what hold us together and bring hope, even in our darkest hours.
No matter where you live or what your circumstances are, you have something to offer. A simple prayer can bring comfort. A donation can meet someone’s basic needs. A conversation can help someone navigate their personal storm.
Let’s make 2025 a year where we show up for each other, using whatever gifts we have to strengthen our communities. Together, we truly can get through anything.
Quick Tip: Be a Helper, Seek a Helper
In times of crisis or uncertainty, remember:
- Find a way to help that lights you up: Whether donating, volunteering, or offering a listening ear, choose something that makes you feel good and hopeful.
- Ask for relief when you need it: Reach out to a friend, family member, organization, or even a stranger. Most people are kind-hearted and will do what they can to help.
- Focus on the good: Look for the helpers in your community and allow their actions to remind you of our shared humanity.

What I’m Currently Obsessed With
Right now, I’m obsessed with my prayer text threads with friends and colleagues, waiting to hear if they’ll have a home to return to. Life spares none of us from hardship, and when my community is in the thick of it, I pray. Over and over and over again.
When I fear, weep, or waver, I pray. Big prayers, little prayers, half-formed prayers, silent prayers. Shouting, singing, weeping… I pray. I pray for others to pray. Prayer works, and I’m obsessed with its power to comfort, heal, and connect us to something greater.

2025 will be what we make of it. Let’s choose to focus on the good, to be the helpers, and to seek help when we need it.
Each of us has something within us: a gift, a strength, a kindness that can make a difference. Together, we truly can navigate anything.
May this year bring you moments of peace, clarity, and connection. May you find joy in giving and receiving the support that is needed where you are.
With hope and gratitude,
Katie Kanowsky
