What I’ve Been Reflecting on...

I’ve always been a stargazer. If it twinkles in the sky, I’m watching. The moon, the sun, and meteor showers. I follow them like breadcrumbs from the chaos. Last summer, while preparing to head out to Donner Lake to see friends and watch the parade of planets, I looked up the next eclipses.

That’s when I saw something that made my heart skip a beat: an annular eclipse, the “ring of fire” in October 2023, and a total eclipse in April 2024… and both visible from the United States.

When I traced their paths, I saw they formed a perfect X over the United States.

I didn’t know what it meant, but I felt a pull I couldn’t ignore. I had no plan, just a deep, intuitive knowing:

Go.

So I did.

I went to Texas alone. I spent time in prayer, writing, silence, and ceremony, listening. I walked the lands in reverence and devotion. I pulled cards for guidance, and I asked about the eclipse, where we are as a whole, where we are as a country, as a people. As I packed to leave for the airport, I asked my native spirit cards, “What do I need to know about this eclipse?”

The card I pulled was the White Buffalo.

At the time, I didn’t fully understand its significance. But I started learning. I began reading about what this symbol means to the Indigenous peoples of North America and especially the Plains Tribes, where the stories of the White Buffalo Calf Woman live on in sacred prophecy.

This message has not only echoed but reverberated and strengthened as time passes.

The White Buffalo

On July 4th, I sat in ceremony, holding space in prayer for our country, its future, its freedom, and the deep healing I believe it so desperately needs. As I reflected on our nation’s state and asked my guiding question:

“What do I need to know about our country’s current situation?”

Once again, I pulled the White Buffalo.

I was immediately overcome with emotion and a deep sense of gratitude.

I have been challenged to remain settled in my body when I see what is happening to the people in my community. I have moments of hopelessness, and on our nations Independence Day, as celebratory explosions were going off around me, I couldn’t help but imagine what it is like to live where those are bombs, not just sparkles in the sky. I needed to be reminded that revolutions are never peaceful, and neither is nature. What was the White Buffalo saying to me?

I harnessed my hyperfocus and went down the rabbit hole.

I discovered something incredible: a wild white buffalo calf was born in Yellowstone National Park on June 4, 2024, just weeks after the total solar eclipse completed the X across the U.S.

This is rare.

Truly rare.

Wild white buffalo calves are not albinos or bred in captivity. They are one in ten million, and deeply revered in Indigenous prophecy, especially among the Lakota and other Plains Tribes, who see the return of the white buffalo as a sign that sacred times are upon us.

Honoring Indigenous Wisdom

According to Prophecy…

"When the white buffalo returns, the people will be united and the Earth will be healed."

 — Lakota Prophecy

Throughout history, many Indigenous nations have seen celestial events eclipses, unusual animal births, and changes in the land, not just as natural phenomena, but as messages from Spirit. As signs that something sacred is happening.

"During a solar eclipse, the sky opens and allows prayers to travel faster to Wakan Tanka."

 — Lakota Teaching

"The Crow believes eclipses are signs that the world is shifting… that Spirit is speaking."

 — Apsáalooke (Crow) Perspective

The birth of a white buffalo calf in Yellowstone has echoed across North America. A white buffalo is one in ten million. a deeply rare and sacred sign in many Plains traditions. It is not just a marvel of genetics, but a message from the Creator.

Inspiration Corner: The Signs Are Speaking

There are moments in history, ancient and modern, when the natural world speaks louder than our newsfeeds, our algorithms, or even our thoughts. This is one of those times.

In the midst of fire, flood, and fighting, Indigenous prophecies remind us: these moments are not without meaning. They ask us to remember the Earth, to care for one another, and to live with reverence.

Something ancient is stirring.

Can you feel it?

The Earth is not just changing, she is communicating.

        Are you listening?

In the midst of this shift, a white buffalo is born, is a sacred sign of renewal. A reminder to return to prayer. To reverence. To right relationship.

And here’s the part that really moves me:

That calf was likely conceived in September 2023, during the pre-shadow of the “ring of fire” eclipse. That timing gives me chills. It reminds me that we are not separate from what is unfolding. The Earth is alive. We are in conversation. And the signs are speaking.

"The birth of a white buffalo is a sign that a great change is coming. It is a message from the Creator to return to prayer, to respect the Earth."

 — Lakota Elder

“A white buffalo is the most sacred living thing you could ever encounter. It is like the second coming of Christ… It will bring about purity of mind, body, and spirit, and unify all nations—black, red, yellow, and white.”

Floyd Hand, Oglala Lakota spiritual leader

This is not a call to panic, but to presence.

Not to fear, but to feel.

To soften, listen, and tune in.

"Be still, and the earth will speak to you."

"When a man moves away from nature, his heart becomes hard."

"Like water, we must be gentle and strong. We must learn to flow and still wear down the hardest stone."

  — Lakota Wisdom

So in these times of noise and overwhelm, let this be your medicine:

Be still. Be kind. Be listening.

 The signs are here.

 The way is calling.

Something beautiful is being born right now, through pain, yes, but also through prayer and presence. And that’s what the White Buffalo teaches us:

In times of chaos, there is sacred potential.

Even through darkness, a holy light returns.

We are the potential. We are the ones to bring the holy light.

Quick Tip: Speak the Five Love Languages to the Earth

You’ve probably heard of the Five Love Languages: words of affirmation, quality time, physical touch, gifts, and acts of service. They’re how we give and receive love with the people who matter most.

But here’s a twist: Try speaking all five love languages to the planet.

  • Words of Affirmation

Speak your gratitude out loud. Compliment the trees. Whisper your awe to the sky. Tell the flowers how beautiful they are. Bless the earth with your voice.

  • Quality Time

Put your phone down. Go for a walk without a destination. Sit under a tree. Watch the clouds move. Be with the Earth, not just on it.

  • Physical Touch

Put your bare feet on the ground. Hug a tree. Dip your fingers in a stream. Rest your hand on a rock warmed by the sun. Let your body remember it belongs here.

  • Gifts

Plant something. Leave a bundle of flowers or a poem in your favorite outdoor spot. Compost. Offer beauty back to the land.

  • Acts of Service

Tend to the earth. Support local growers. Use less. Pick up trash. Protect more. Do something loving in her honor.

When we love the Earth like this, we come into deeper connection with life itself. We remember we’re not separate, we’re part of the wild, sacred whole.

Closing Thoughts

With Gratitude and Reverence

I offer deep respect and gratitude to the Indigenous peoples of this land, past, present, and future, who have held sacred relationships with Earth, sky, and Spirit since long ago.

This reflection was shaped by the wisdom and teachings of the Plains tribes, especially the Lakota Nation, who welcomed the birth of the white buffalo with ceremony and prayer. I also acknowledge the guidance of other Indigenous voices, including the Apsáalooke (Crow), Cherokee, Navajo, and many others whose stories and prayers continue to shape our collective consciousness.

Thank you for not giving up. Thank you for your integrity. Thank you for welcoming those who walk with love, reverence, and respect.

I was born, raised, live, and work on the ancestral homelands of the Patwin, Miwok, Nisenan people, whose connection to the land endures despite centuries of displacement. May we honor their continued presence and sovereignty.

As a mother to children with Native blood, this is not just history to me, it is devotion. Devotion to my children. To their children. To their ancestors. To the land that my own ancestors have walked upon for generations. I come from peaceful people, and I carry this love forward through my reverence, through my prayer, and through my commitment to listening, remembering, and protecting the sacred.

May this be more than acknowledgment, may it be a living prayer. A commitment to live in harmony with what is holy, seen, and unseen. And to remember that we belong to the land, not the other way around.

May your soul remember the rhythm of the rivers and your purpose rise like the sun through the fog.
